Melvin was born June 21, 1937, at home in Dora Township, Otter Tail County. He was the youngest of 10 children born to Emil and Erna (Zitzow) Rosentreter. Melvin grew up in rural Vergas, attending District #151 Country School through the ninth grade. Following his father's passing, Melvin remained home to help on the family farm.

After they were married, Melvin and Donna took over the care of Melvin's family resort, Haven Hill Resort on Loon Lake (which has been in business since 1918 and remains open today). Melvin and Donna raised three daughters - Tammy, Cheryl and Lori.

When Melvin was not busy on the farm, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, snowmobiling with family and friends, and driving around the area in his old red pick-up. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Throughout the years, Melvin served on various community boards. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Loon Lake.

Melvin will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Donna of Vergas; three daughters, Tammy (John) Schultz of Vergas, Cheryl Rosentreter of Geneva, Ill. and Lori (Terry) Hoffman of Vergas; nine grandchildren, Jessica (Rich) Teske, Jacob (Ashley) Schultz, Logan (fianc, Alyssa) Schultz, Bradley Bares, Brittany Bares, Nathan Hoffman, Jena Hoffman, Melissa Hoffman and Austin Hoffman; two great-grandchildren, Isabella Schultz and Emerson Schultz; one sister, Betty Glawe of Vergas; one brother, Benny (Lois) Rosentreter of Lindstrom, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Rosentreter and Jane Rosentreter; along with several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Melvin in death were his parents, and seven siblings.
