WADENA -- A Menahga man is accused of a brutal beating of a woman in a car and in his home in Menahga on Oct. 1.

On that date, Menahga Police Chief Scott Koennicke responded to the St. Joseph's Hospital emergency room on a report of an assault in Menahga. Koennicke met with the female alleged victim, who reported that Cody Weller Maaninga, 21, was in her passenger's seat as she was driving when Maaninga abruptly shifted the vehicle into park, got out, walked around and picked the woman up and carried her to the passenger's seat. He then got behind the wheel himself and drove off, threatening to crash the car and kill them both, court records said.

When Maaninga got to his residence, he allegedly pulled the woman out of the car and threw her to the floor of his garage. He also allegedly punched her in the face, then picked her up, placed her in a chair and apologized several times. He grabbed a rifle and pointed it at himself, court records said, and said he planned to shoot himself.

He was charged Nov. 5 with felony second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, felony terroristic threats and gross misdemeanor domestic assault.

Maaninga has a previous domestic violence conviction in December 2007.

His first appearance was set for Dec. 7 in Wadena County District Court.
