MINNEAPOLIS — Top-seeded Minnehaha Academy (24-6) was the benefactor of poor shooting by Perham and advance to the State Class 2A Semifinals with a 53-41 victory over the Yellowjackets in Minnesota basketball action Wednesday evening.

Perham ends its season with a record of 23-8.

“If we make lay-ups, we’re ahead,” Perham Head Coach Dave Cresap said. “We missed nine or ten layups at the rim. That's part of the game, though. Those shots don't go in, you still have to play hard."

Perham was snake bitten early in the game and the basketball would not go down until Jordan Hein sank a three-pointer nearly seven minutes into the game. Perham trailed 9-3.

Minnehaha Academy led by as many as a dozen points in the first half and looked in control of the scoreboard until Perham’s Tyler Glines lit up for 10 first half points and cut a 20-8 disadvantage with five minutes until the break to 27-24 at halftime.

The Yellowjackets closed to within a bucket twice, down 30-28, with 14:08 to play on a basket by Eli Beachy. Beachy closed the gap again to two 34-32 on a turnover by John Pryor.

"Couldn't be prouder to get down here and battle like that against the number one seed," Cresap said.

Minnehaha outscored Perham 19-9 down the stretch and stopped a streak of two first-round bow-outs by advancing.

The Redhawks used balanced scoring from seven shooters, led by Jesse Johnson’s 13, 3-6 from behind the arc. Johnson was the only Redhawk in double figures.

Jordan Hein scored nine for Perham; Eli Beachy added seven in support roles to Glines' 15 points. Perham shot 14-43 (32.6 percent). Both teams shot 34 percent in the first half. Minnehaha Academy picked up their game late finishing at the rim on 19 of 44 shots (43.2 percent).
