Opening up her own salon has allowed Nikki Guck – the Perham stylist who’s famous for her up-dos – to finally let her own hair down a little.

After nine years of working at other salons in town, Nikki is now her own boss, and that gives her the luxury of running her salon, her way – and she said that way is “warm and laid-back…comfy and fun.”

Now, she’s enjoying working alongside her sister-in-law, Teresa Guck, and she can let her kids come and visit sometimes, worry-free. It’s a casual atmosphere, where she can set her own pace.

The new salon, Mirror Mirror Salon and Spa, offers “a little bit of everything,” said Nikki.

Haircuts, color and perms are available, as are eyelash extensions, facials, chemical peels, body wraps, tanning and sugaring.

“I love it,” she said of being a stylist. “I love hair.”

The Perham native has been doing hair for herself, her friends and her family since she was a little girl. After high school, she briefly considered a different career, in nursing, before pursuing her true passion as a stylist.

Trained at The Salon Professional Academy in Fargo, N.D., Nikki later returned to Perham, where she worked at Hair Haven for six years, then Salon at Second for three years.

In that time, she became well known for her up-dos.

“I pride myself on them,” she said.

And she makes it a point to be there for her customers – whether a girl is in need of an up-do for a wedding, prom or other special event, Nikki will travel to a home or the site of the event to get the job done right.

Sugaring is also one of her favorite things to do, both for her customers and herself. She describes this hair removal method as a bit like waxing, but without the potential skin damage. It has another perk, too – with repeated applications over time, the hair will start to grow back thinner and finer, reducing the need to shave.

“I love doing sugaring,” she said.

The eyelash extensions are a specialty of Teresa’s. These are popular with women who have naturally thin lashes and want to thicken them up, and/or for special events, such as a wedding. With these extensions, Teresa said, the eyelashes don’t ever need to be curled, and there’s no mascara necessary. They last for weeks.

Tanning options at Mirror Mirror include two traditional beds, as well as a SunFX spray tanning machine. The SunFX product is high-quality and looks natural, Nikki said, never resulting in that dreaded “orangey” look.

Both Nikki and Teresa grew up in Perham, graduated from high school here, then moved back for their careers and families. They’ve worked alongside each other before, and when the opportunity arose to continue working together – this time at Nikki’s own salon – it was a no-brainer.

Nikki bought the business (formerly Pure Skin) Dec. 28, and had the place open just two weeks later. She did some noticeable remodeling and redecorating in that short time, including knocking down a wall to open up the front room, redoing some of the wiring and plumbing, and giving the whole space a fresh coat of paint – “to brighten it up,” she said.

She’s also drummed up some good business already – both her and Teresa said the salon has been busy in its first few weeks.

Nikki had been looking into the possibility of opening her own salon for a while, she said, and knew soon after seeing it that this location, right on Main Street, was the right one for her.

“This place had the right space,” she said, looking around at her new salon last week. “It had everything I wanted.”

Mirror Mirror is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome.
