Moenkedick honored as UM-Crookston Student-Athlete of the Week
CROOKSTON, Minn. - University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball player Katrina Moenkedick (So., F, Perham, Minn./Early Childhood Education) and men's basketball player Tyler West, Jr. (Jr., F, Portland, Ore./Communications) have been selected UMC Teambackers Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances on the basketball court last weekend against Minnesota State University Moorhead and Northern State University.
The honor is the first for Moenkedick this season, while West has received the award once already this season. Both student-athletes were chosen for their performances from Thur., Dec. 12 to Wed., Dec. 18. The UMC men's basketball team has received the award six times this season while the women's basketball team has received the awared three times, twice with Alexa Thielman (So., G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science) and once to Moenkedick.
Moenkedick averaged 14.5 points and five rebounds last weekend in games against Northern State and MSU Moorhead. She was 7-of-16 from the field with 16 points and six boards in a hard-fought loss to the Wolves Friday as the Golden Eagles came up just three points short after testing NSU all night. Moenkedick was 7-of-16 from the field against Northern State. Against MSU Moorhead, Moenkedick had 13 points and four rebounds, was 4-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from the chairty stripe. Selected to the All-NSIC Freshman Team last season, Moenkedick is currently averaging 14.6 points and 6.2 rebounds as a sophomore.
West has made an instant impact as a junior college transfer for the Golden Eagles, averaging 10.2 points and 5.3 rebounds this season. On the weekend, West averaged 12.5 pints and 7.5 rebounds as Minnesota Crookston fell in a pair of games against MSU Moorhead and Northern State. West had his first career double-double at UMC with 10 points and 10 boards against Northern State Friday. He was also 5-of-6 from the free-throw line against the Wolves. Versus MSU Moorhead, West had 15 points and five rebounds, was 4-of-8 from the field and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.
The UMC Teambackers Student-Athlete of the Week award was created to honor Golden Eagle student-athletes for performance on or off the field of play. Every week, at least one male and one female student-athlete will be chosen as the award winner. Award winners will normally be announced on Wednesday with exceptions being made based on time of events or other unique circumstances.
