Moenkedick's Career Night Guides Golden Eagles Past Peacocks 80-69 to Open The New Year

CROOKSTON, Minn. - A career night for Katrina Moenkedick (So., F, Perham, Minn,/Early Childhood Education) helped the University of Minnesota Crookston snap a five-game losing skid with an 80-69 win over Upper Iowa University. Moenkedick had a career-high 30 points and completed a double-double with 11 rebounds on the night. The Golden Eagles out-scored the Peacocks 47-37 to help catapult into the new year with a win. Minnesota Crookston improves to 5-6 (2-5 NSIC) with the win. Upper Iowa falls to 4-7 (3-4 NSIC) with Friday's loss at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn.

Moenkedick finished the night shooting 10-of-16 from the field and also did a great job of getting to the charity stripe, connecting on 10-of-13 free throws. In addition to her 30 points and 11 points, Moenkedick also had six steals on the night. Alexa Thielman (So., G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science) struggled to find her shot Friday night but found other ways to score as she finished with 19 points, five assists and four rebounds for the Golden Eagles. Thielman shot 7-of-16 from the field, but was just 1-of-5 from beyond the arc. Thielman came into the night shooting 51.0 percent from three-point range.

In addition to Moenkedick and Thielman, Ebony Livingston (Jr., G, St. Paul, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) had an instant impact for the Golden Eagles Friday, finishing with 16 points including three treys. Selina Barnes (Fr., G, Colorado Springs, Colo./Health Science) was a boost off the bench for the Golden Eagles playing one of her best games in recent times as she tallied eight points off of the bench using her speed and ball handling to get into the lane and score for Minnesota Crookston.

The Golden Eagles finished the night shooting 29-of-59 for 49.2 percent and were 5-of-16 for 31.3 percent from three-point range. Minnesota Crookston was 17-of-23 for 73.9 percent from the charity stripe. Minnesota Crookston was out-rebounded on the night 41-30. They had 15 turnovers on the game but had 12 steals on the night. Upper Iowa was led by 20 points and eight rebounds from Whitney Kieffer. Lauren Buck added a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards, while Sam Thrapp had 11 points, four rebounds and five assists. The Peacocks were 28-of-63 for 44.4 percent from the field and 6-of-21 for 28.6 percent from three led by three treys from Lindsay Carroll.

The Golden Eagles got out to as much as a five point lead over the Peacocks out of the gate following a Livingston trey to make it 7-2. Upper Iowa would go on a 6-0 run to take the lead 17-15 at the 9:22 mark led by four points from Emily Gustafson. After Christine Thorn (So., G, St. Michael, Minn./Early Childhood Education) tied the game at 17-17, the Peacocks would extend the lead even further to five (22-17) following a Buck trey. A back-and-forth pace would continue as the Golden Eagles would take the lead back late in the first half (33-32) following a Moenkedick jumper.

The Peacocks would continue to threaten through the first five minutes of the second half as they led by two (42-40) following a Kieffer lay-in. From there though the Golden Eagles would take over as they went on a 13-0 run  to go ahead 53-42 at the 11:26 mark of the second half. UMC was ignited during the run by the play of Moenkedick who had six points and also stepped up big defensively with two steals. Barnes was also a catalyst, as she added two steals and four points to help ignite the run.

Upper Iowa would not go away though as they would cut the UMC lead to two points (62-60) following a Carroll three-pointer. UMC would counter led by three-pointer buckets from Ashley Martell (Jr., G, Somerset, Wis./Health Science) and Livingston to get back out to a 10-point advantage (72-62) with 3:12 remaining. The Golden Eagles would hold on down the stretch to pick up the 80-69 win over their counterparts from Fayette, Iowa.

The Golden Eagles will look to build on their momentum Sat., Jan. 4 as they host Winona State University, who comes in with an 8-3 (4-3 NSIC) mark.
