Visitors to the Station House Restaurant in Perham might notice a new addition - the Brew Pub & Wine Bar recently opened in the back of the building where the Iron Horse Lounge used to be.

Alex Belquist, who co-owns the bar with his girlfriend Britt Nelson, said that he was excited by the opportunity to open a new bar in Perham.

Belquist, originally from New Rockford, N.D., worked as a bartender in Fargo, N.D. before going to culinary school in St. Paul, Minn. After that, he had a desire to move back to a smaller town.

When the Iron Horse Lounge space became available, he said, it seemed like a perfect low-investment, high-reward opportunity, even though he hadn't been to Perham before.

"There's a lot going on here. It's a very busy town," he said. "The people have been great so far."

Belquist said that the interior space of the bar was remodeled from how the Iron Horse Lounge used to be. New furniture and decorations were either homemade or purchased from local stores.

"It's a lot different than how it used to be," he said.

The bar offers four tap beers, many more types of bottled beers, wine and a full liquor selection. Belquist hopes to expand the wine selection, in addition to adding other drinks such as mojitos or margaritas.

The bar also offers French-pressed coffee and tea, which Belquist also hopes to expand.

The bar offers happy hour, which is $1 off select taps and all liquors, Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturday and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A full menu is also available until 9 p.m. on weekdays and 10 p.m. on weekends courtesy of the Station House.

Belquist said that he's excited about brining a different type of atmosphere to the Perham bar scene.

"When people ask me, what's the theme of your bar?" he said, "I say that I want people to decide for themselves. There's a little something for everybody here."

The bar will be hosting an open house/grand opening event on Friday, July 1, starting at 6 p.m. There will be drink specials and giveaways throughout the night, and live music will start at 9 p.m.

The Brew Pub & Wine Bar is located at the back of the Station House building and is open 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. every day of the week. The bar can be reached at 218-346-7225, or at
