Sorella’s Salon and Spa is under new ownership.

Matt and Monique Hendrickx officially took over the Perham salon on April 1.

The move was a “dream come true” for Monique, who has worked at the salon for the past three years, first as a part-time salon coordinator and soon after as full-time salon manager.

“I love it here,” she said of Sorella’s. “This is my most favorite place to be.”

A Park Rapids native, Monique moved to Perham in 2005 for a registration job at MeritCare Clinic. Just days after moving to town, she met the man who would become her husband – Matt.

Born and raised in Perham, Matt still works for the family business, Hendrickx Electric Inc., while co-owning Sorella’s.

Monique went to work for the salon after falling in love with it as a customer.

“I have always loved this salon,” she said. “Every time I would come in to have services done, I always felt so important and special. All of the service providers always treated me as if I was someone special, and I always felt so good about myself when I would leave.”

Under the Hendrickx’s ownership, Monique said, the salon will continue to offer all the services it has in the past, and then some.

Sorella’s offers hair design and color, skin care and nail services, and massage therapy and other spa treatments.

On Monday, the Hendrickx’s were in the process of adding two more pedicure thrones, so the salon will be able to offer four pedicures at a time instead of two.

The couple has already redecorated parts of the salon, giving the front entry area a fresh paint job and putting in some new décor.

“We believe in shopping local,” said Monique, “so all of our beautiful décor is all bought locally in Perham... We like to support all of the small businesses Perham has to offer.”

They’ve also introduced a new product line, a fast-drying, chip-resistant nail polish brand called OPI Products.

Sorella’s is an Aveda concepts salon, and all its stylists are required to keep up with the latest trends and styles, attending two advanced education classes through Aveda every year, as well as two color classes and cutting classes at the salon.

Monique said the transition to new ownership has gone well, and the 10-year-old salon is still thriving. She and her husband hope to retain ownership well into the future, and may even like to expand the business someday.

“It is just so nice and calm and relaxing,” Monique said of her new salon. “The girls that we have working here, we’re like a family. We have no drama. It’s a really pleasant place to be.”

Matt and Monique will be having an open house and grand opening of Sorella’s on June 18. From 3-7 p.m., the salon will offer some complimentary services, prize drawings, appetizers and discounts on Aveda products.
