New woodcarving traveling exhibit at ITOW museum

June 30, the In Their Own Words (ITOW) Veterans Museum will host a fine arts exhibit, Kaddish in Wood, featuring the woodcarving of Dr. Herbert Savel.

Trained in the German woodcarving technique, Savel has created several hundred of these three-dimensional reliefs based on Holocaust-era photos of Nazi victims, mostly children. The exhibit features 130 children, with a focus on the French.

"The goal of my art project is to represent the Holocaust in terms that the human mind can comprehend," Savel said. "Through my art, the suffering is returned to the level of the individual and the unimaginable atrocities of the Holocaust are, in essence, rehumanized."

Kaddish in Wood is a traveling exhibit from the Florida Holocaust Museum.

The ITOW Veterans Museum in Perham is open this month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday. For more information, visit, call 218-346-7678 or email
