It's a boy!

The baby boy weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces and measured 19.5 inches long. He was delivered by Dr. Jaimie Deraney and Dr. Illene Reed.

In a telephone interview, Hotakainen, the baby's mother, said Jason is the fourth child she's delivered at the Perham hospital, but the first to be delivered via cesarean section.

"It's the doctors, how they take care of you and how they explain everything to you," she said of why she's chosen Perham Health for her deliveries. "I really do appreciate the doctors that are there."

Hotakainen said her c-section was planned due to the baby's large size.

"He was measuring a week ahead," she said.

Her last baby was born large, and she explained that she didn't want to go through that experience again.

Despite the birth being planned, Hotakainen said she never considered that hers might be the New Year's Baby. She thought others would be born in Perham before hers.

But she was excited about it.

As is tradition at Perham Health, the family of the New Year's Baby gets to take home a wealth of donated gifts. Hotakainen said she and her fiancée were still sorting through the items as of Monday.

"Thank you to everybody who donated," Hotakainen said.
