New York Mills falls in first round of Class A state softball

North Mankato — New Ulm Cathedral made quick work of the New York Mills Eagles scoring five runs in the first inning en route to a 13-0 shutout victory in the opening round of the Minnesota Class A state softball tournament Thursday.

Eight different batters hit safely for the Greyhounds, led by right fielder Anne Schwarz, who had two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs. Shortstop McKenna Berdan was 2-3 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI.

Autumn Roberts, Rhiana Roberts, Lydia Irons, Madison Kane, LeAnn Flanigan, and Kaitlyn Kane all had one hit for the Eagles.

Autumn Roberts took the loss pitching five innings, allowing nine runs, seven earned. Roberts walked and fanned two batters.

Leah Krzmarzick picked up the victory in relief of starter Anna Mohr. Both pitchers threw three innings each and walked one batter. Mohr had a pair of strikeouts. Both pitchers faced 13 Eagle batters.

New Ulm Cathedral takes on Cherry. New York Mills will battle Browerville in the consolation bracket tonight at 5 p.m.
