A solid effort wasn't enough to save the 2009-10 season for the Perham girls' basketball team, as they fell to No. 2 Pequot Lakes Saturday 64-59.
The No. 3 Yellowjackets lost to the Patriots 64-59 Saturday afternoon tournament game at Pequot Lakes.
It was the Yellowjacket girls basketball team's second game of the Section 8-2A 2010 playoffs.
The Yellowjackets were ahead 32-31 at the half, but the Patriots proved to have a more successful second half, outscoring Perham by a 33-27 margin.
The Patriots hit 7-10 three-point field goals to the Jackets 2-13, while Pequot Lakes went 11-17 on free throws to the Jackets 9- 15.
Pequot Lakes also made a higher percentage of two-point field goal attempts, even though the Jackets scored more points via two-point buckets than did the Patriots.
Sophomore Katrina Moenkedick was high scorer for the Jackets with 19 points and seven rebounds followed by her sister, senior Elisa, with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Junior Kaylan Huber and sophomore Becky Stoll each racked up seven points and four rebounds, while senior Jessica Speicher and junior Kelli Meehl made six points each and picked up two rebounds each.
Jackets roll over Vikings 74-55 to start playoffs
The Perham rock-pep band "Red-headed Stepchild" called it right when they blasted out the Steppenwolf rock classic "Born to be Wild" just before the game began, Thursday night.
The Lady Jackets played some wild basketball on their home floor just like they were born to it, as Perham rock and rolled to a 74-55 first-round playoff win.
The Yellowjackets girls basketball squad was like a well-oiled machine as they sprang ahead 17-4 with 10:48 left in the first half and stayed that way for the entire game while the Vikings skidded around trying to catch up..
At halftime the score was 40-21 and senior Elisa Moenkedick had scored 14 points and her sophomore sister Katrina had scored a dozen.
With 7:41 left in the second half, the score was 63-38 and the Jackets had a 29-point lead with 3:44 left to go and about the time the MC announced that "Elisa Moenkedick is the high scorer of the game with 28 points."
She also grabbed eight rebounds.
Katrina Moenkedick was second ranked scorer with 21 points (six rebounds) and third was sophomore Becky Stoll with 10 points (three rebounds).
Speicher scored six points and junior Steph Miller scored five with each grabbing four rebounds.
The final 74-55 tally proved that the Jackets machine managed to smoothly hold the 19-point lead all the way through the second half.
"We played well as a team and it was a 100 percent team effort," Elisa Moenkedick noted after the game.
A beaming head coach John Gullingsrud praised his team after the game.
"It was a nice win. We got out early which is the key to the game and we kept the intensity up the whole game. Everybody played. We played 12 girls tonight."
