The Vikings held Perham scoreless for the first six minutes of the second half and built on their 17-12 advantage at the break with a 12-0 run to go up 29-12 with 12 minutes to go. Hunter Salathe's first basket of the game snapped the Pelican Rapids run.

Back-to-back steals by Perham's Josh Nordick and Jordan Hein led to buckets by Eli Beachy and Hein to cut the lead to 11 points, 33-22, four minutes later.

A 7-0 burst by Pelican's Travis Haugen and Ryan Bruggeman with field goals led to a game-sealing three by Devin Schell pushing the lead to 18 points, 40-22 with five minutes to go.

Pelican led by as many as 19 points.

Tucker Forsgren owned the paint on the offensive end and the Viking defense shut down Perham's scoring leaders to half their average points.

"Definitely a big win for us - a home game, first conference game this year so we had to send a statement we're not last year's team," Forsgren said. "We're this year's team."

The game was the first at home for Pelican Rapids after starting the season with road trips to Fergus Falls, Detroit Lakes and Minnetonka.

Bruggeman led Pelican Rapids with 13 points. Schell scored 12. Forsgren had 10.

Forsgren's biggest bucket came in the early moments of the second half when he grabbed a loose offensive rebound, hit a fadeaway in the paint and was fouled, sinking the free throw to put Pelican Rapids up 25-12 early snatching second half momentum and igniting the Pelican Rapids faithful, who packed the gymnasium.

Beachy led Perham with 10 points. Nordick had seven. Hein and Salathe scored six points each.

The victory was the sixth straight by Pelican Rapids over Perham at home.

"We take pride in our home court advantage," said Forsgren.

Conflicting statistics report Bruggeman had a triple-double with 13 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds. The road statistics have him listed with nine rebounds.

Regardless, Bruggeman was the catalyst to the pace of the game and dominated play with and away from the ball.
