No. 9AA Yellowjackets take KLN Family Brands Invite championship
PERHAM — Five Perham wrestlers won titles leading the No. 9AA Yellowjackets to the team championship at the KLN Family Brands Invitational Saturday.
Dylan Fudge (106), Sam Pirrotta (126), Patrick Glynn (160), Cole Schmitz (170), and No. 9AA 182-pounder William Parks all topped their respective brackets.
Fudge scored two first period wins by fall at 1:40 over Nick Hendrickx of New York Mills and at 1:15 in the finals over Ben Johnson of United North Central.
Pirrotta won a pair of 3-1 decisions over Austin Haman of New York Mills and Thomas Stageberg of New London-Spicer to take the 126 title.
Glynn defeated New York Mills’ Gunner Flynn 8-2 and pinned Jarrett Hatlestad of New London-Spicer near the end of regulation at 5:56 for the 160-pound championship.
Schmitz won back-to-back decisions for the 170 title: a 3-2 win in the finals over Dylan Huttunen of UNC and an 8-3 victory over Sam Erckenbrack of New York Mills.
No. 9AA Parks pinned Mille Lacs’ Austin Sperr at 56 seconds to advance to the finals at 182 where the Perham junior won by fall at 3:09 over UNC’s Tanner Bacon.
No. 8A Jeremiah Harper of New York Mills defeated Perham’s Ben Nelson 4-1 in the 113 finals.
New London-Spicer’s Jakob Stageberg, ranked No. 2AA, defeated Perham’s Chase Curtis by major decision 16-4 at 120.
New York Mills’ Tyler Ehnert defeated UNC’s Tommy Tellers 4-3 at 132.
No. 8AA Treyton Austvold of NL-S won at 138 over UNC’s Logan Walz by major decision 13-0.
No. 5A Nik Borchert of Mille Lacs defeated Perham’s Colin Neitzke 5-1 in the 145-pound finals.
At 152, Logan Eckhoff (NL-S) won a 7-4 decision over UNC’s Sam Tellers.
New York Mills Tyler Patron, ranked No. 2A at 195, defeated No. 9A Tristan Palmer of UNC 3-1 in the finals. Patron advanced with a pin at 3:50 over Luke Gould of NL-S.
No. 4A Taylor Carlson of UNC won the 220 title with a 3:46 fall over New London-Spicer’s Noah Welsh.
At heavyweight, New London-Spicer’s Brandon Knisley defeated Perham’s Jesse Bucholz by a slim 1-0 decision.
As a team, Perham tallied 228 points to win the tournament easily over United North Central in second place with 178 points. New London-Spicer was third with 176; New York Mills placed fourth (145.5), followed by Mille Lacs (97) and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley/Nevis with 77 points.
The field of teams was down to six participating from 10 expected as four teams declined to attend due to inclement weather conditions.
Perham will be back in action Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 5:30 p.m. in a home triangular with Pelican Rapids and Breckenridge.
