Northwest League: Silver Pirates down Verndale 8-3
VERNDALE -- The Perham Silver Pirates defeated the Verndale Geezers 8-3 this past weekend.
The Silver lads got on the scoreboard early as Tony Stoll led off the game with a single, moved to second on Garry Grewe's sacrifice and scored on Chad Griffin's single.
The lead was short-lived as Verndale came back with a run in the bottom of the first.
Perham put the game on ice in the second with four runs - the big blast was a Shawn Ohman dinger.
Tim Studer singled and scored - Rob Litzau walked and scored and Garry Grewe singled and scored. The RBI went to Grewe, Chad Griffin on a single and Jim Nelson on a single.
Verndale scored solo runs in the fifth and sixth to close out their scoring.
Perham scored a solo run in the fourth as Grewe singled and Jason McClellan singled to score Grewe.
The Silver boys closed out the scoring in the sixth with a pair of runs - Nelson reached on an error; Ray Sailer singled and both scored on an error.
Perham's line was eight runs on 14 hits and two miscues. Verndale had three runs on five hits and two errors.
Ohman was the winning pitcher for Perham. He pitched the first four innings giving up three hits and one run.
Ohman also had three strikeouts and three walks. Rob Litazu pitched the last three frames allowing two runs on two hits and a pair of walks.
Five Pirates had two hits in the game - Stoll, Griffin, Nelson, Sailer, and Rob Litzau.
The Web Gem came from Tim Studer as the right fielder snatched a fly ball up against the fence.
Player of the Game - This goes to Shawn Ohman, the winning pitcher and the big blast in the second (third home run of the season for the Pirates).
The Silver Pirates are now 4-2 on the season and travel to Urbank on Thursday to take on the Goldtimers in a 7:30 p.m. tilt.
