Novaks compete at National wrestling tourney

New York Mills wrestlers Jordan and Shane Novak grappled with some of the country's finest matmen at the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) wrestling tournament held in Virginia Beach, Va.

The brothers both held 4-2 records. Shane scored a pin against Garek Strouse of Pa. Jordan pinned Seth Vose, Connecticut's state champion.

Jordan battled the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament and National Title winner Ryan Nieman of Mich., for over four minutes before being pinned.

Over 2,900 wrestlers from 47 states and two foreign countries participated in the 28th annual tournament. 52 wrestlers from Minnesota traveled to Virginia. Five other area wrestlers participated: Mitch Steffens--Wadena-Deer Creek; Colin Turchin and Jake Braaten --Bertha-Hewit-Verndale; Travis Borchart--Eagle Valley and Jake Long--West Central Area.

27 four-time state champions, 48 three-time state champions and 137 two-time state champions were in the field. An automatic draw is used to schedule matches, meaning the two best wrestlers could meet each other in the early rounds.

All-American honors are given to the top eight wrestlers in their respective weight classes. Steffens placed 6th at 112 pounds sophomore division. Shane Novak missed honors by one match after being defeated 5-1 by Christian Pagdilao of California.
