NY Mills gearing up for Ronald McDonald Ride
New York Mills residents are revving up their engines in preparation for the town's 10th annual Ronald McDonald Ride.
The event is the world's largest Ronald McDonald ride in the country, raising more than $100,000 a year for an organization that's touched the families of many in the area.
More than 30 people are on the committee that puts the ride together. And while it's no doubt a fun event, the crew is serious about the cause and the funds it raises.
"Everybody knows someone who has used the Ronald McDonald House," said committee member Greg Karvonen.
Preparation for the ride never really ceases, as area schools take on fundraisers year-round, including a pop tab collection drive that typically generates 1,000 gallons of pop tabs.
"It's a fun forming habit for kids," Karvonen said.
From kids in classrooms to riders from around America, the event draws on the heartstrings of many.
On the big day, riders from around the region and those from as far away as Florida gather in NY Mills to celebrate for the cause.
Festivities surrounding the ride begin the evening of Thursday, June 9 at the VFW in NY Mills, with Wild Knights Entertainment and R and R Wrestling.
On Friday, June 10, the party continues with musical act Slamabama.
The race takes off Saturday, June 11 at noon from the VFW, with stops scheduled for Wolf Lake and Wadena.
Before the race, a pancake breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. at the NY Mills School, hosted by Close Up, a school organization. The breakfast will be followed by a 10 a.m. bike rodeo for kids.
When riders return to NY Mills after a day on the road, there will be a hog roast, live auction and door prizes, along with a silent auction and a $20,000 Harley motorcycle giveaway. Entertainment will continue Saturday night with TNT, an AC/DC tribute band, and Cut Loose.
