NY Mills holds tennis banquet

The New York Mills girls tennis awards banquet was held Mon. Nov., 1 at Eagle's Café and brains were awarded as much as court prowess.

The team received a State Academic Team Gold Award from the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association. As a team, the Eagles held a team grade point average for players in tenth through twelfth grades of 3.82.

The Eagles were the only Section 8A team to receive the State Academic Team Gold Award. This requires a team GPA in grades 10-12 of 3.75 - 4.00.

Individual members also received Spotlight on Scholarship Certificates. This award is determined from grade point averages, as well. Those receiving the Gold award were Lauren Bach, Missy Hendrickx, Jenna Esala, Kristin Kane and Emily Blomberg for GPAs of 3.6 - 4.0).

Receiving Silver were Jen Maki and Krista Guldseth for GPAs of 3.0 - 3.59).

Lauren Bach and Missy Hendrickx were named to the Academic All-State Team by the MSHSCA. Both Bach and Hendrickx were also named to the Prairie Conference All-Conference team. Hendrickx garnered the Prairie Conference Most Valuable Player Award.

Awards voted on by the team were:

Rookie of the Year-Kristin Kane, as a first year varsity player who contributed the most to the team this season.

Jenna Esala received the Hustle Award given to the player who gives her best effort in all circumstances whether on the practice court and in matches.

Vicky Selander was named Most Improved, given to the player who has improved her skills, attitude, and effort the most during this season.

Lauren Bach was named the Team Player, given to the player who works hard, respects others, displays sportsmanship and puts her teammates first.

Hendricks, as the team leader, was given the team's Most Valuable Player award.

Varsity Letter Winners: (all of the above players) plus Abby Salo, Jordin Roberts and Megan Dow.

Roberts and Dow were first year letter winners.

Junior high player Kori Salo received a participation certificate.

"I'm very proud of all our players and the team attitude the displayed all season," Head Coach Gary Bach said. "In particular, we congratulate Missy and Lauren for their all-state academic awards and their all-conference team selections, and Missy for being voted the conference MVP."
