The association inducted Buerkle into its Pioneer Club during the group's 123rd annual meeting last week.

According to a press release, Buerkle has a lifetime of banking at Farmers and Merchants State Bank in NY Mills. His career began with a summer job in 1956 and blossomed into his current tenure as President and CEO of the bank's Board of Directors.

Buerkle graduated from NY Mills High School in 1958, attended Valparaiso University in Indiana, and finally returned home to work full time at Farmers and Merchants.

Buerkle has enjoyed helping local people "start businesses, build homes and achieve dreams through the banking business." He has also "quietly and modestly invested many dollars and hours to help various organizations in the NY Mills area," according to the release.

Buerkle and his wife Pat raised five daughters in NY Mills, "successfully blending banking, community and family" throughout the last five decades, the release states.

In addition to Buerkle, eight other Minnesota bankers were inducted into the Pioneer Club.

Joe Witt, CEO of the Minnesota Bankers Association, stated, "It is because of their hard work and dedication that banks remain a solid foundation in their communities."

Buerkle commented in a phone interview, that the award "was fun to get."

"Fifty years is a long time," he said. He plans on semi-retiring, which means: "I only work when I feel like it."
