The 6th Annual New York Mills Pageant will be held Thursday, June 11 at the James W. Mann Performing Arts Center.
The pageant begins at 7 p.m. with a silent auction starting at 5:30 p.m. The silent auction is free and open to the public. There are over 200 items to bid on, including golf outings, a cooler of meat, bike, resort packages, crafts, a picnic table, PACC memberships, food, beauty products, toys, a variety of gift certificates and many other goods and services.
44 young ladies, nine princesses in three categories - Miss, Lil' and Junior - as well as an honorary princess, will be crowned at the pageant.
According to Shanna Dettwiler, pageant organizer, over the past six years, the community has enhanced the annual NY Mills Pageant through donations and various other levels of support.
"The pageant has offered an excellent opportunity for young ladies and girls to compete in our teen and child pageants where they can gain the self-confidence needed to be successful in life and realize their dreams," Dettwiler said.
The pageant is not a talent competition. Pageant judging consists of interview, casual wear, eveningwear, and an on-stage question.
Dettwiler said the 10 crowned each year to represent the community are young ladies, "Who previously may have been too unsure or shy to get on stage by themselves. However, by pageant time they enjoy new found friends, new found confidence, and the experience of being in the spotlight!"
Pageant organizers want the young ladies to gain confidence.
"Of course, we want to have a part in making happy memories for the NY Mills Pageant contestants," Dettwiler said. "But more importantly, we want every contestant who competes in our pageant to go home with a new sense of self-worth, a self-confidence which they may not have had before, and enhanced poise, which can only be developed by actual practice and stage experience."
Appearances that will be made by the 2010-11 royalty include: parades in New York Mills, Wadena, Perham, Ottertail, Henning, Frazee, and Vergas; pageants in Wadena, Perham, Henning, and Wolf Lake; and local events such as the Great American Think-Off, Ronald McDonald House Benefit Ride, Corn Feed, NY Mills Trade Show, annual Easter egg hunt, and Christmas festival.
The NYM royalty princesses are asked to participate in at least 12 events each year.
