NY Mills Spelling Bee winners
Each division competed in their classrooms originally and narrowed down the list to a group of 10 semi-finalists in each grade. From that list, the Dean of Students, Travis Hensch, proctored a written test on with the semi-finalists in which Division 1 contestants were given a new set of 30 words to write, while the Division two semi-finalists were given a list of 50 words.
The top three from the written rounds in each division competed in an oral final on in front of the entire student body, hosted by 6th grade teacher Ruth Koehler.
Each division had the finalists spell a series of words. Their oral round scores were tabulated with their written round scores and given a final score.
Both sets of three finalists tied after the initial oral round was complete. As a result, each division was given a new set of words to spell in front of the student body and after the 'overtime' round, the winners were crowned.
The finals were May 28. Parents and grandparents of the 6 finalists were also invited and most attended with cameras and proud smiles. It was a great event.
