Sarah Honer, an avid local quilter and painter, visited Angela Paavola's class last week to show the students (including her daughter Holly Geiger) basic painting techniques.

Using design templates they found on the Internet, students sketched their favorite books on blocks of cotton material and then filled in the designs with special fabric paint.

Besides their individual blocks, the kids also painted a variety of blocks with a splattering of designs and colors which were pieced for the background.

Honer pieced the quilt together, which will be displayed at the school.

This isn't Honers first quilt project in the community. She said she likes to help students make things that benefit students.

Throughout the month of February, the NY Mills elementary will have a variety of activities in honor of 'I Love to Read' month.

Dress-up days will be every Friday again this year, including pajama day on Feb. 10, beach day Feb. 17 and favorite book character day Feb. 24.

There will be no classroom competitions this year; instead, every student who attains at least one star will receive an "awesome" prize, said Dean of Students Travis Hensch.

The stars are earned based on page count read and varies per grade.

The month will end in an assembly on Friday, Feb. 24 at 1:30 p.m., where a surprise guest will be coming from Fargo and the special prize will be announced.
