Bertha-Hewitt broke up a 5-5 tie in the top of the seventh Thursday at Jacobson Field to beat New York Mills, 6-5.
"It was a tough loss," said head coach Chris Bushinger. "We just can't seem to put seven innings of baseball together."
B-H took an early lead with a pair of first inning runs. Mills bounced back in the bottom fo the second to take the lead on a three run double by Maison Roberts.
The Eagles missed an opportunity to put the game away in the fourth. They did score two runs, one on a thworing error that allowed Tanner Wegscheid to score from first base after a stolen base attempt. The other came in on a RBI double by Mike Baune. Unfortunatly, Mills made three outs on the bases, including one at the plate when David Ayers tried to score on Baune's hit.
Bertha-Hewitt took advantage of two walks and two Eagle errors in the top of the fifth to score three runs to tie the game at 5-5. The Bears scored the winning run in the seventh thanks to a hit batter that lead off the inning and eventually came around to score.
B-H, one of the three co-champs of the Park Region Conference last year, swept the Eagles in 2008, 10-7 and 6-0.
Mills will look to split the season series when they travel to Bertha on May 19.
Mills will head to Ashby on April 24, then return home to host Otter Tail Central on April 28.
