NYM Girls Basketball: 2009-10 Season Preview
Head Coach: Dave Paavola (4th Season, 49-25, 121-94 overall)
Assistant Coach: J.J. Weller.
2008-09 Season: New York Mills finished 18-7 last year, 9-3 in the Park Region Conference (3rd Place). Bertha-Hewitt (22-4, 11-1) won the conference title.
2009 Sections: The Lady Eagles were the No. 3 seed in the 6A North Sub-Section Tournament. They beat No. 6 Barnesville in the first round, 75-46, then upset No. 2 Norman County West in the sub-section semifinals, 48-44. Their season came to an end in the sub-section finals with a 60-36 loss to No. 1 seeded Ada-Borup. A-B then beat the South Sub-Section champ, Brandon-Evansville, for the Section 6A Championship. Ada-Borup then went on to claim their 2nd straight Class A State Championship, beating Red Lake County, Barnum and Ceder Mountain/Comfrey for the title.
2009 Seniors: Hannah Rutten (2008-09 Co-Park Region Conference M.V.P., H.M. All-State Academic), Sam Welter (2007-08 H.M. All-Conference), Kendra McCall, Betsy Helmeke, Brittnie Menze, Maggie Carlson, Terie Rehm.
Get to Know'em: Megan Cole (Jr.), Alicia Boe (Soph., 2008-09 PRC All-Conference, Most Improved).
Strengths: The Eagles will have a ton of experience with two returning All-Conference players (Rutten, Boe) They have eight players with varsity experience and depth at most positions.
Season Outlook: New York Mills should be in the hunt for the Park Region Conference championship, along with the teams that have won the past two titles, Sebeka and Bertha-Hewitt.
Two-time defending State champs, Ada-Borup, are still the class of Section 6A until someone knocks them off. The South Sub-Section will have Brandon-Evansville, Hancock and Parkers Prairie ranked in the preseason top-20.
