NYM Girls Basketball: Eagles hold off W-DC rally to win, 62-55
The Lady Eagles opened 2010 with 62-55 win over Wadena-Deer Creek.
The New York Mills full court press caused some problems for W-DC, and helped the Eagles build a 15-8 lead. The Wolverines closed the gap to three points before NY Mills went on an 8-2 run to open a 23-15 lead.
A 3-pointer by Alicia Boe and a lay-up by Hannah Rut-ten helped create the Eagles biggest lead at 11 points with less than a minute left in the half. W-DC scored the final basket of the period, giving NY Mills a 30-21 lead at the break.
The Wolverines stayed in the game by controlling the action in the early part of the second period. They slowly chipped away at the lead by outscoring Mills 21-13. With four minutes to play, The Eagles had been cut to one, 43-42.
But Mills held their ground, and when Brittnie Menze scored after an offensive re-bounds with 2:10 to play, the Eagles were back up, 55-50. A basket and pair of free throws by Rutten got the lead back toeight with a minute to play.
Rutten led all scorers with 31 points to go with 13 re-bounds. Boe added 19 points and six boards.
