The Lady Eagles didn't have much trouble in their third straight game away from home Thursday night as they dominated the Pirates in Verndale, 72-27.


Big first half's by Kendra McCall and Hannah Rutten helped New York Mills to a 44-13 halftime lead. Rutten scored 16 of her 18 points in the first half, and McCall scored all 11 of her points before halftime. McCall would finish the game with seven steals and five rebounds, four coming off the offensive glass. Rutten had eight boards (five offensive), two blocked shots and two steals.

The Eagle defense held Verndale to 19 percent shooting from the field (11-for-57) and they forced 31 turnovers thanks in part to 19 team steals. New York Mills also controlled the boards, out-rebounding the Pirates by 27 (47-20).

Alicia Boe and Brittnie Menze were also in double figures for Mills. Boe finished with 17 points and seven assists. Menze had 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

Betsy Helmeke didn't score, but she did have four rebounds and four steals for the Eagles. Maggie Carlson added five points and eight boards.

New York Mills swept the Pirates last year, and have now won five straight in the rivalry.

Long Holiday Break

The Eagles will have a 20-day break from competition over the holiday's. Their next game will be Jan. 7, 2010 when they host Wadena-Deer Creek at the Mills Sports Center. Once they return, they will go back-to-back nights as they travel to Ashby on Jan. 8.
