NYM Girls Basketball: No. 10 Eagles dominate at Henning
New York Mills began a stretch of three-straight road games on Jan. 22 at Henning with a dominating defensive performance in a 74-44 win.
The Eagles held Henning to 24 percent shooting (18-for-75)for the game and forced 24 turnovers. Henning was just 9-for-48 from the field (19 percent) in the first half.
Mills, meanwhile, was led by Alicia Boe, who hit three 3-pointers, and Hannah Rutten, who was 8-for-12 from the line, just in the first half, as the Eagles took a 40-21 lead. Boe had a total of 16 points in the half and finished with 25 for the game. She also had eight rebounds and four blocked shots.
Rutten scored 12 in each half to finish with 24 points to go with 10 rebounds, six steals and three blocks. Sam Welter ended with eight points, six rebounds and seven blocked shots.
The Eagles also beat Henning 69-48 on Dec. 8, and have now won nine in a row over the Hornets.
The Lady Eagles were set to face Perham Monday, but the game was postponed due to weather. It will be made up on Friday, Feb. 12 at Prairie Wind Gymnasium in Perham.
The Jackets have won five in a row over Mills. The Eagles last win in the series was a 44-40 overtime victory in December, 2003.
On Jan. 29, the NY Mills girls will be part of a doubleheader with the Eagle boys at Bertha-Hewitt. The varsity boys will be in the new gym in Bertha at 6:15 p.m. The varsity girls will follow at 7:45 p.m. The Mills girls beat then No. 5 ranked B-H on Jan. 15, 61-45. The Lady Bears are currently ranked No. 6, while New York Mills comes in at No. 10 in Class A.
The Lady Eagles will be looking for their sixth straight win over Verndale when they host the Pirates at the Mills Sports Center on Feb. 1.
