NYM Police Chief resigns
Perham Minnesota 222 2nd Avenue SE 56573

James Van Schaick resigned as New York Mills Chief of Police last week. Former Perham and New York Mills Police Chief Brian Nelson was named Interim Chief.

On March 17, during a special New York Mills City Council meeting, Van Schaick submitted his letter of resignation, which was to be effective immediately. It was part of a separation agreement approved by the council after a closed portion of the meeting.

In the agreement, Van Schaick and the city “agreed to settle all disputes between them, known and unknown, with finality and without further expenditure of time, effort or money.”

As part of the agreement, the city will pay a total of $18,071: $14,471 to Van Schaick for “claimed damages including, but not limited to, back pay, front pay, mental pain, emotional distress, loss of benefits, and reimbursement for COBRA payments,” and $3,600 for Van Schaick’s attorney fees.

In return for the payment, Van Schaick “releases and forever discharges” New York Mills, the League of Minnesota Cities and other entities of claims that were or could have been raised.

Further details were not discussed or released. Attempts to reach Van Schaick and Nelson were unsuccessful.
