Missed opportunities led to No. 6 seeded Bertha-Hewitt's upset over third-seeded New York Mills in the sub-section quarterfinals Tuesday. The Eagles left 11 runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded to end the game in a 4-3 loss to the Bears in New York Mills.

Bertha-Hewitt, which finished with four runs on 10 hits, swung the bat well against Eagles pitcher Stephanie Cichy. The Bears scored two runs in the top of the first inning. The Eagles scored one run in the bottom of the first on a single by Kimberly Becker to plate Cichy.

The Eagles tied the game 2-2 in the second inning when Kahilainen scored on a Cichy sacrifice fly.

The game remained tied until the sixth inning when the Bears took advantage of an Eagles error to score two runs and lead 4-2.

Down two runs going into the bottom of the seventh the Eagles mounted a rally.

Senior catcher Kristen Perala reached on an error to lead off the inning. Nicole Nebosis followed with a walk, After a flyout by Becker and RaeAnna Salo hit into a fielder's choice the Eagles were down to their final out with two runners on.

Samantha Welter singled to score Nebosis and get the Eagles within one at 4-3. Kendra McCall reached on an infield single to load the bases and keep the rally alive. But that's where the rally died and season ended for the Eagles who failed to score again.

The Eagles scored three runs on seven hits in the game and committed three errors. They left the bases loaded in both the second and seventh innings.

"We had opportunities in the first two innings," Eagles head coach Bryan Dunrud said. "Typically, we come up with big hits in those situations. We made it pretty easy for them by hitting a lot of fly balls and leaving runners in scoring position."

Senior starting pitcher Stephanie Cichy suffered the loss, giving up four runs on 10 hits in seven innnings. She walked two and struck out six.

Welter and Becker led the Eagles offensively, each getting two hits with a double and RBI.

Mills (13-7) had won seven in a row against B-H, including a doubleheader sweep earlier this year on April 20, 13-3 and 11-1.

Dunrud said this was a very tough loss for the team, given the opportunities and scoring chances throughout the game. He noted it was particularly tough on the four seniors - Kristen Perala, Morgan Kahilainen, Stephanie Cichy, and Kimberly Becker - all of whom have put a lot of hard work into the Eagles softball program.
