The top three contestants will win the $75,000 grand prize classroom technology makeover.

Gifted and Talented Teacher Rex Kingsbury started taping the short musical skit in Julie Rud's third grade class on Tue, Oct 18.

The skit includes a lot of singing accompanied with old fashion props, including an old phone, recorder and cameras, as well as some new technology, including an interactive whiteboard.

Kingsbury changed the words from the original hit "Doo a Ditty," originally sung by The Exciters, and more notably performed by Manfred Mann.

An example of the revised lyrics goes a little like this, "Here we are just a sitting in our seat, we don't have do wah didley, we need new technology."

According to the website, the contest will be judged on three specific areas: the effectiveness of demonstrating use of technology in the classroom, the collaboration between teachers and students in creating the video, and the overall creativity and spirit.

Judging will also consist of a public voting period. On Nov. 1, the top five contestants will be posted for a public vote on 2011classroommakeover.shycast.com.

The voting period will be held from Nov 1 through Dec 5. Voting is limited to a single vote per person.

There are three different categories: grades K-5, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. New York Mills is competing in the K-5 category.

As of Oct 25, there were 134 entries nationwide. The deadline is Oct 25.

Kingsbury will be helping the Perham School compete for a grant later in the year.
