The Eagles hit the road again on Tuesday with a game at Section 6A rival, Hawley. Mills played well and all three sets were close, but Hawley ended up with a 3-0 win (25-20, 25-23, 25-21).

Mills Tournament

The Eagles finished in second place at their annual New York Mills Invitational Volleyball Tournament last weekend.

"It's been a couple of years since we've placed in the top-three in our tournament, so the girls should be proud," head coach Amy Koskela said.

Mills opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over Menahga (25-23, 25-21). They continued winning with their next match, a 2-0 win over Swanville (25-11, 25-22). The Lady Eagles tied their third match against Verndale, 1-1 (20-25, 25-16).

The final match of pool play came against Upsala, where the Eagles lost, 2-0 (25-17, 25-12). Mills and Upsala had a rematch in the tournament championship and it was much closer, but Upsala came out on top, 2-1 (16-25, 25-23, 15-12).

"On Saturday the girls were a little sluggish until the championship against Upsala," Koskela said. "Game one against them was the best performance of the day. The girls fought as hard as they could but lost a tough battle."

The Lady Eagles will have a pair of home matches this week, starting with a tough Park Region match-up with Bertha-Hewitt on Sept. 17. B-H, currently ranked No. 7 in Class A, finished one-game ahead of NY Mills last season as the conference runner-up behind Sebeka.

"Bertha-Hewitt is going to be a tough match on Thursday," Koskela said. "Our girls are always able to keep up with them a couple of games, but we'll really need to get focused early on and play our game from the get-go."

B-H has won 12-straight over the Eagles going back to 2002. Last year, the Bears won, 3-1, in regular season match play, and 2-0 at the Bertha-Hewitt Tournament.

Mills will remain at home against Battle Lake on Sept. 21. On Sept. 24, the Eagles go on the road to face Verndale for the second time this season.
