After a road win to open the season last week, the New York Mills volleyball team played their first game Tuesday night at the Sports Center. The Lady Eagles improved to 2-0 on the season with a 3-0 win over Staples-Motley (25-22, 25-22, 25-13).

Alicia Boe had a solid all-around game with five kills, three blocks, 11 digs and four aces. Hannah Rutten added a team-high 10 kills to go with 11 digs and four blocks. Betsy Helmeke contributed with four aces and 10 digs, while Lauren Rud dished out 19 set assists.

Mills won last year's meeting, 3-2.

3-0 road win

Mills won their season opener on Sept. 1 at Frazee, 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-15).

Alicia Boe and Hannah Rutten both had four kills to lead the Lady Eagles. Rutten added three blocks, 12 digs and two service aces. Boe led the team with three aces.

Megan Cole and Nicole Nebosis each had three kids for Mills. Lauren Rud led the team with 13 set assists.

Home stand

Mills will remain on their home court at the Sports Center tonight (Sept. 10) when they host Hawley. The varsity match starts at 7:30 p.m.

The annual New York Mills Invitational Volleyball Tournament will be this weekend. Matches at the high school gym and at the Sports Center start at 9 a.m.

Participating teams will include: NY Mills, Upsala, Swanville, Menahga and Verndale. The championship and 3rd place matches are scheduled for 2 p.m.

The Eagles will hit the road again on Sept. 15 with a game at Section 6A rival, Hawley. They will have a pair of home matches following that, against Bertha-Hewitt on Sept. 17 and against Battle Lake on Sept. 21.
