New York Mills had five medal winners last weekend at the Big Bear Invitational in Cass Lake. Despite having three open weights, those five medal winners were enough to give the Eagles 158 points, which was good for fifth place in the 31-team individual tournament.

Leading the way for New York Mills were a pair of runner-ups. Shane Novak at 103 pounds and Landyn Saewert at heavyweight.

Novak, ranked No. 1, had three pins and an 8-3 major decision in the semi's over Tyler Giza of Fergus Falls, to get to the championship match. There, he met No. 2 ranked Isaac Novacek of Badger/Greenbush-Middle River. Novacek got the better of Novak on Dec. 11, 3-1, and he made it 2-for-2 this year with another close 2-1 overtime decision.

Saewert also had an easy road to the finals, picking up three pins and a tech fall in the semifinals. In the championship, Saewert lost to No. 5-AAA Mark Wychor of Moorhead, 10-2.

Earning a third place finish was Jordan Novak at 140 pounds. Novak, ranked No. 3 at 140, had a first round bye, followed by a tech fall win and pin to get to the semifinals. There, he was pinned in 5:14 by Jordan Hanson of Hutchinson. Hanson, ranked No. 5 in Class AA, went on to beat Mariano Portillo of Crookston in the 140 pound championship.

Novak beat United North Central's Max Aho, 12-3 in the consolation semi's, then beat Moorhead's Chase Morlock in the third place match, 6-4.

Tommy Selander went 5-2 at 112 pounds to finish in fourth place. Jarrod Norton went 4-2 at 215 pounds to finish fourth. New York Mills had open weights at 160, 171 and 189.

Tuesday Triangular

Because of early holiday deadlines, EOT Illustrated went to press before the Mills Triangular Tuesday night against Parkers Prairie and Pelican Rapids. Check online at www.eotillustrated.com for results when they are available.

After taking a break from competition over the holiday's, The Eagles will jump back into action in a big way in the New Year as they host No. 4-A Frazee at the Mills Sports Center on Jan. 5.
