Ottertail's Sophie Thiel a Fargo Star finalist
Fargo Star finalists, including Ottertail native Sophie Thiel, will be performing this Saturday, from 6 to 9 p.m., at The Venue at The Hub, 2525 9th Ave. S., Fargo.
The event is free and open to all ages. The audience will decide the next Fargo Star by voting for their favorite singers at the finals.
Much like the music charts, Fargo Star 2010 is being dominated by the youth.
Four of the 10 finalists for the Forum's annual singing competition are teenagers. And all of them are under age 30. With a pop music scene dominated by the 16-year-old pinup prince Justin Bieber and teen queens like Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, Fargo Star feels so hip.
In the Bieber role we have two young girls with voices bigger than their age (13 and 14). Playing Swift is an 18-year-old with similar hair. And for those who like their young country studs, we have a strapping young lad who fits the bill of 20-something cowboys like Easton Corbin.
Again, we have the youth movement. But mostly we have 10 "undiscovered" singers trying to raise their voices past the din of karaoke contests or school choirs and into the stratosphere of the stars.
Sophie Thiel's Fargo Star bio
Hometown: Ottertail, MN
Favorite song: "City of Blinding Lights" by U2
Song selection: Inspired by Beyonce's take on the classic song, Thiel will perform "Ave Maria." "It's a beautiful song about love, and I think it's cool that people can take old music and make it new," Thiel says.
Musical background: When she was a young girl, Thiel says she was too embarrassed to sing in front of others. That has changed, as the Minnesota woman has recorded two Christmas albums for Remnant Records and tours with the Christian band Firestarters.
If Hollywood is making a movie about your life, who would play you?: Thiel says she'd choose Taylor Swift because the country singer's musical career is something Thiel would like. "Not to mention, we both got the curly blond hair going on," Thiel says.
