NEW YORK MILLS -- The New York Mills Legion Post 116 baseball team took advantage of two errors to defeat Parkers Prairie Post 219 by a score of 3-0 on a humid Wednesday evening.
Most of the game took place in the 66 feet between the mound and home plate.
New York Mills starter Adam Snelgrove pitched a five-hit gem striking out 14 batters while issuing no walks.
Snelgrove fanned the side in back-to-back third and fourth innings to retire Parkers Prairie. He got out of a bases-loaded jam in the final inning to end the game the same way.
Snelgrove's opponent, Parkers Prairie pitcher Trey Thompson, struck out three Eagles in the bottom half of the third inning for nine consecutive outs by strikeout by the two hurlers.
Thompson gave up only two hits and three unearned runs suffering sloppy defensive second and third innings to take the tough loss.
Derik Gaudette reached to start the third for New York Mills on a hit by pitch, but Thompson sent New York Mills' 2-3-4 hitters: Adam Patron, Brandon Kupfer and Tyler Patron back to the dugout stranding Gaudette at third base.
Before all that, New York Mills' left fielder Sam Slieter managed to score a run.
Slieter scored the third run of the game moving around the bases with little help from anyone holding a bat.
Slieter walked and advanced to second when Gaudette was beaned, then took third base and home on past balls.
New York Mills did get some work off the bats in the second inning to start the scoring.
Tyler Patron led off the second inning with a single. Dan Kraft laid down a sacrifice bunt to Thompson along the first base line to move Patron into scoring position.
Kyle Vorderbruggen reached first on an error charged to second baseman Hunter Arnold. Patron moved to third on the play.
Patron scored when Vorderbruggen attempted to steal second base. The throw to the second base bag got by Arnold for his second error of the inning and Patron walked in from third base.
Vorderbruggen advanced to third base on a 6-3 putout that retired Snelgrove and scored on a past ball for the 2-0 lead.
Logan Riedel was the only player with a multi-hit game and reached third base in the opening half of the first inning. He was stranded there when Snelgrove induced a Thompson fly ball to Slieter in left field for the third out.
Riedel's second base hit was in the fourth inning between Snelgrove's six straight outs by strikeout. Riedel sat at first watching Thompson and Eric Ronning go down looking.
Parkers Prairie threatened in the seventh inning thanks to singles from Ronning and Wyatt Samuelson. Thompson fanned to start the final frame but reached first when the third strike got away from catcher Adam Patron.
The trio loaded the bases with one out.
Snelgrove finished his final inning of work by taking care of all three outs himself for the third time in the game.
Kyle Schlosser went down looking at a 1-2 pitch for the first out. Tarin Thompson fanned swinging at a 1-2 pitch for out number two. Cole Thomas, Parkers Prairie's number nine hitter, ended the game looking at a bases juiced called third strike in a full count.
Game note: Adam Snelgrove struck out four batters in the seventh inning.
