Patrick Ray Slaughter, 22, of Philadelphia, formerly of Wabasha, Minn., died on Feb. 28 in Philadelphia. He was born June 25, 1991 in Perham, the son of Katrina (Szarke) and Larry Slaughter. He graduated from Wabasha-Kellogg High School in 2009 while employed by Hill Hardware. He later moved to Philadelphia to attend school. Most recently he was employed as a supervisor for Bartash Printing Company in Philadelphia.

Patrick was a very artistic person and a lover of the arts. He was very active in the drama department of Wabasha-Kellogg High School, appearing as an actor in many of the school's productions, including "Seussical." He was also a member of the school's rock band, "Rockmeister and the Test Tube Babies," serving as the drummer. He loved drawing and painting, dabbling in abstract art and graffiti. He also loved the outdoors and the leaves on the trees. Patrick had an infectious smile that brought joy to everyone who knew him. He will be missed beyond measure.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Katrina and Lonnie Grotjahn, Wabasha; his father, Larry Slaughter, Jr., Winona, Minn.; brother and sister-in-law, Alex and Kayla Slaughter (and their daughter); and Patrick's niece, Azaelia Slaughter; brother, Logan Slaughter; sister, Deborah Slaughter; brother, David Grotjahn; and stepsister, Jordyn Anderson; maternal grandfather, James (Dianne) Szarke, Perham; maternal aunts, uncles and cousins, The Reverend Christopher Szarke, Ithaca, New York, Dave and Gina Mueller and family, Dayton, Minn., Maria (Szarke) and Wayne Terry and family, St. Clair, Minn., David Szarke, Tucson, Ariz., Daniel and Dawn Szarke and family, Mettawa, Ill., and Jon Szarke and Janell Vuong, Windsor, Conn.; paternal grandmother, Patty Slaughter, Jeffersonville, Ind.; and paternal great-grandmother, Christine Pratt, Charlestown, Ind.

He was preceded in death by maternal grandmother, Patricia (Trandahl) Szarke; paternal grandfather, Larry Slaughter, Sr.; and two aunts, Deborah (Szarke) Mueller and Shawn Slaughter.

A funeral service was held on March 7 in Wabasha with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Wabasha. Casket bearers were Alex, Logan, and Deborah Slaughter, David Grotjahn, Jordyn Anderson, Michael Mueller, Joseph Mueller and Zach Pacis.

Patrick's maternal aunts and uncles have established an annual scholarship in his name for a graduating high school senior who will enter formal study of the arts.
