Perham advances with easy win over No. 8 Pelican Rapids
PERHAM — Sophomore Alec Meyer held No. 8 Pelican Rapids to two hits and top-seeded Perham (17-2) pounded out 10 runs to end the Vikings season by mercy rule in the sixth inning as the top-seeded Yellowjackets advanced to double elimination play in the Section 8AA South subsection Tuesday at Krueger Field.
Perham scored in each inning, led by Tanner Carlson, who crossed the plate three times in the game.
Carlson’s game-winner came in the first after reaching on a fielder’s choice, stealing second and coming around on a base hit by CJ Mulcahy.
Meyer allowed a single to Blaine Gorton, the first batter he faced, then retired nine straight until Dean Knorr singled up the middle to start the fourth inning.
Meyer, a lefty, has a knack for picking off runners at first. He walked NIck Thompson in the second inning and promptly sent him back to the dugout.
Pelican Rapids employed a courtesy runner for Knorr in the fourth inning who was quickly picked off.
Of Perham’s 11 pick offs this season, Meyer has 10. He fanned four batters in the game picking up the victory in five innings.
Jake Lueders pitched a perfect sixth inning of relief striking out one and not allowing a baserunner.
Perham added two runs in the second when Joe Solberg and Mason Malikowski scored unearned.
Carlson walked and scored his second run on a long double to the base of the left-centerfield fence by Jaden Meyer before a 13-minute rain delay halted play.
Carlson reached base in the fifth on his second of three walks and scored for the third time on an error pushing the lead to 5-0.
Malikowski scored his second run of the game in the sixth after receiving the first of four walks from Knorr that sent the Pelican starter to the dugout.
Knorr started the fifth inning with strikeouts of Austin Erickson and Joe Solberg, but lost command and was pulled after 4 ⅔ innings, six runs, three earned, three strikeouts and seven walks to take the loss.
Two errors and three singles led to four Perham runs by Jaden Meyer, Erickson , Hayden Sturdevant and Josh Meader icing the game in the sixth.
The shutout was Perham's seventh of the season and fourth in the past six games.
Jaden Meyer was 2-4 with one RBI. Nine Yellowjackets hit safely in the game.
Pelican Rapids finishes the season with a record of 4-16.
In other 8AA South games, No. 5 Ottertail Central defeated No. 4 Detroit Lakes 6-5 in DL. The Bulldogs will play Perham in Hawley Thursday at 3 p.m.
No. 2 D-G-F was upset by No. 7 Fergus Falls 5-2. The Otters will face No. 3 Hawley. The Nuggets dumped No. 6 Barnesville 6-1.
In the Northern half of 8AA, top seed Park Rapids squeaked by No. 8 Northern Freeze 6-5. The Panthers will play No. 4 Roseau in Crookston Thursday. The Rams ousted No. 5 Warroad 6-4.
No. 2 Thief River Falls and No. 3 East Grand Forks also advanced to play each other Thursday. The Prowlers defeated No. 7 Crookston 4-3. The Green Wave beat No. 6 Mahnomen/Waubun 10-3.
Perham will play two games in Hawley on Thursday at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
