Pelican Rapids moved up from No. 7 to No. 5 with a record of 4-0. Crosby-Ironton enters the poll at No. 10 at 2-1, having lost to Perham by seven points at home earlier this week.

Regionally, in Class A, Battle Lake dropped one spot from No. 5 to No. 6, but remain undefeated.

Hawley's Ben Ellefson

Probably the biggest surprise in the early season does not show in the polls. The Hawley Nuggets, who were 25-2 last season, undefeated against any team not Perham, is off to a 1-3 start.

Hawley has recorded losses at Fergus Falls 67-56, at Oak Grove 80-72, and at home to Thief River Falls 74-58. Their lone victory was over Breckenridge in Hawley 69-63.

According to a Facebook post by the Minnesota State High School League, the Apple Valley High School boys basketball team, which is the defending state champion and top-ranked team in Class 4A, will play a game tonight, Thursday, Dec. 12 that will be televised by ESPN2.

The Eagles will play host to Whitney Young, a team from Chicago that is led by the 6-foot-11 Jahlil Okafor; Apple Valley's Tyus Jones and Okafor have both committed to Duke University.
