Perham earns No. 1 wrestling seed in Section 8AA tournament

THIEF RIVER FALLS — The No. 10AA Perham wrestling team (19-7) was awarded the top seed in Section 8AA and will begin Saturday’s 12-team tournament with a bye.

The seeds are:

1. Perham

2. Detroit Lakes

3. Thief River Falls

4. Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus

5. Sauk Centre/Melrose

6. Fosston/Bagley

7. Roseau

8. Ottertail Central

9. Fergus Falls

10. East Grand Forks/Sacred Heart

11. Albany

12. United Clay-Becker

The top four seeds all have first round byes as the eight remaining teams face elimination matches.

Perham’s first match will be at 2 p.m. against the winner of Ottertail Central and Fergus Falls.

Perham was undefeated in six matches during the regular season against section opponents.

The Yellowjackets are the two-time defending 8AA champions. Thief River Falls was the last team other than the Jackets to advance to state, doing so in 2010-11, defeating Perham in the semifinals and Staples-Motley in the finals.

The Section 8AA team tournament begins at 11 a.m. at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls this Saturday, Feb. 15.
