Perham FFA 6th at the state competition

The Perham FFA chapter placed 6th at state competition this past week in the national chapter award competition. The chapter will move on to national competition this coming October at the National FFA Convention.

This award is given to the chapters that have been the most successful in the leadership, personal growth and career success of its members.

Thirty-five students competed in state career development events from floriculture to horse judging. The events are designed to help prepare students for careers in agriculture. Classroom instruction comes alive as students demonstrate their skills in a competitive setting. CDEs test the abilities of individuals and teams in 23 major areas of agricultural instruction.

Nine teams competed at state competition. The state team placings and winners are:

Seven chapter members received the State FFA Degree, the highest degree that can be earned in the Minnesota FFA Association. Those receiving the degree were Emily Young, David Langlie, Emily Guck, Kristina Januszewski, Tiana Lynne, Nathan Haskins and Jason Rich.

FFA members also interviewed and competed in award areas related to their project to prove their proficiency and understanding in their respective Supervised Agricultural Experience Areas. The State winners were:

David Langlie - Bronze in Sheep Production

Emily Guck - Silver in Agricultural Sales

Jason Rich - 3rd place in Agricultural Processing

Tiana Lynn - Gold in Small Animal Care

Andrew Gorentz - 3rd Place in Dairy Production

Michael Lehmann - 2nd Place in Diversified Agriculture

Nathan Haskins - Gold in Agricultural Processing

Kaylee Sazama - First Place in Equine Science

Kaylee will move on to National Competition this coming October at the National FFA Convention.

FFA banquet May 15

The Perham FFA Chapter will be celebrating a successful year at its annual banquet on Saturday May 15 at 1 p.m. at the high school.

The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 506,199 student members - all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture - as part of 7,429 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

The National FFA Organization changed to its present name in 1988, in recognition of the growth and diversity of agriculture and agricultural education. The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
