Some students competed in career development events at the convention. These events are meant to help develop the ability to think critically, communicate clearly, and perform effectively in a competitive job market, said Perham’s FFA Advisor, Carl Aakre, in an email to the Focus.

There were 24 career development events at the convention, covering job skills in everything from communications to mechanics.

Perham students earned a total of eight gold rankings, 11 silver rankings, and 12 bronze rankings in career development event categories ranging from forestry to dairy cattle handling.

Joe Heinecke took sixth place in dairy foods, and the horse evaluation team took ninth overall.

Other students competed in proficiency award categories, which honor FFA members who have developed specialized skills that they can apply toward their future careers. Three Perham students were state proficiency winners in categories such as beef production and diversified livestock.

Additionally, students went to career and leadership workshops, listened to motivational speakers and attended a career and college fair.

“This year was a great success that showed great potential for the future years of the FFA in Perham,” Aakre wrote.
