The Perham girls golf team has been dominating conference opponents both as a team and individually.

"I have been very pleased with our team play so far in the Heart O' Lakes," Head Coach Cory Solberg said. "Our entire team has played really well this season and that is evident by our scoring averages. It should make for a great finish in the HOL."

Monday was just another day at the links for the girls team beating second place conference foe Pelican Rapids by 26 strokes at the Bois de Sioux Golf Club in Breckenridge.

Perham's win keeps them four points ahead of Pelican Rapids for the top spot in the conference.

Conference standings after the Breckenridge HOL meet are: Perham--4; Pelican Rapids--8; Barnesville--14; Hawley-Ulen-Hitterdal--16; West Central Area--17; Lake Park-Audubon25; Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton--27 and Breckenridge--32.

Abby Feist of Pelican Rapids was medalist shooting a low score of 40. Perham, however, took four of the next five spots. Ali Smith and Holly Karkela were two and three shooting 42 and 45, respectively.

Becca Huebsch's 47 and Kaylan Huber's 48 were good for fifth and sixth sandwiching Hawley's Lexi Matfeld in a four-pack of yellow.

"Breck is usually a pretty tough place to play," Solberg said. "It was great to see our team take first place and have four individuals in the top six."

The Yellowjackets took the top spot at Willow Creek Golf Course in Barnesville winning another HOL meet with a total score of 178 strokes.

Pelican Rapids finished 15 strokes back for second with 193, followed by: Hawley-Ulen-Hitterdal--199; Barnesville--200; West Central Area--214; Lake Parke-Audubon--241, and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton--249.

Other Perham scores: Kari Cavanagh--49, Becca Huebsch and Rachel Nelson both shot 50.

The girls battled a chilly wind and rain while hosting their own HOL conference meet last week.

The girls combined score of 170 was 28 strokes better than second place Pelican Rapids.

Huber took medalist honors shooting a 39 in tough conditions.

Perham scores from the home HOL meet: Huber--39; Huebsch--42; Karkela--44; Smith--45; Nelson--47; Cavanagh--50.

The success of the varsity team has spread to the underclassmen. Solberg noted great achievements on the links are coming from the junior varsity, as well.

"Our junior varsity team has also had a wonderful season, with great team and individual scores," Solberg said. "We are very excited about the last two weeks of our season."

In non-conference play, the Yellowjackets placed fourth in an 11-team field at Longbow Golf Club in Fargo over the weekend.

Karkela was low for the Yellowjackets with a sixth-place finish overall shooting a 43 and 46 for an 89.

Smith shot a 95 for second best on the team and 15th place overall tied with Mary Kading of Park Rapids.

Other Perham scores: Huber--98; Nelson--103; Destiny Mitchell--112 and Tina Scheidecker--133.

Team totals: Roseau--353; Pelican Rapids--375; Crookston--382; Perham--385; East Grand Forks--386; Park Rapids--388; Fosston--400; Wadena--423; Hawley--430; Thief River Falls--439 and WHAL--462.

As of Monday, May 17, after the Breckenridge tourney, the Perham girls own six of the top nine individual conference rankings.

Karkela and Huber hold over an average one-stroke lead on Pelican's Feist in tournament play. Smith is in fourth. Huebsch is sixth. Nelson and Cavanagh are eighth and ninth.
