Perham girls track take titles in half the events at Region 6A-Sub meet
PERHAM — The Perham girls track team won five consecutive events and nine in total in a dominating win at the Region 6A Subsection track and field meet held in Perham, Thursday, May 23.
Brynnan Covington won the 800 and 1600m runs, but by comfortable margins and Sydney Karels took the 3200m run, leading to Perham’s hurdling duo of Natalie Murphy and Olivia Nelson, who both battled for the top spot in the 100 and 300m hurdles.
Perham also won two of four relay races, the 4x400 and the 4x800.
In the field, Miranda Lockhart won the discus with a throw of 115-feet, six-inches. Lockhart added a third place shot put of 31-01. Susan Merkins brought home Perham’s final event victory in the pole vault clearing eight-feet. Qualifiers will race at the Region 6A meet Thursday, at Minnesota State University - Moorhead beginning at 11 a.m. The top five Subsection individuals in each event, along with qualifiers by specific times and the top two relays all advance to Moorhead.
In the 800m run, Brynnan Covington and her sister Ciarrin qualified with Brynnan’s winning time of 2:28.59 and Ciarrin’s fourth place time of 2:39.75. Mary Riestenberg finished fourth (5:55.00) in the 1600 behind Brynnan Covington’s 5:27.75 first place time. Riestenberg also qualified in the 3200 in fifth (13:08.74) behind teammates Lizzie Fudge (13:07.63) in fourth and the winner, Sydney Karels, in a time of 12:09.50.
Murphy and Nelson split the two hurdles races: Murphy won the 100m in 16.65; Nelson was runner-up in 16.87. Nelson won the 300m in 47.78; Murphy was third in 49.77. Nelson, Marlee Curtis and both Covington sisters teamed up to win the 4x400m relay in 4:22.81. Ciarrin Covington, Fudge and the Karels sisters, Racole and Sydney, won the 4x800 in 10:21.31, finishing nine seconds in front of runners-up Barnesville.
Olivia Strand qualified for Thursday’s Region meet with a third place high jump of four-feet, ten-inches. Defending state champion in the 200m, from Pelican Rapids, Sommer Haugrud put on an impressive display in the dashes winning the 100m in 12.71 and the 200m in 26.03. Haugrud was runner-up at state in the 100m last year. New York Mills’ Lydia Rutten won two events: the 400m in 59.34, the only racer to finish in less than a minute and the high jump, with a leap of five-feet, two-inches. Rutten was the only high jumper to clear the five-foot bar.
