Conference games late in the season are never easy regardless of the opponent and the Perham girls team found out the hard way against Barnesville and Hawley.

The two losses comprise the first two-game losing streak for the Jackets this season. Their record dropped to 16-4.

Barnesville was victorious at home, 70-65, in overtime. It was a tale of two halves versus Hawley Monday night. Hawley squeaked out a last second victory, 53-51.

"Our girls got out to a lead in the first half but Hawley took control in the second half and made some big plays down the stretch to hold on for the win," Head Coach John Gullingsrud said. "We never really got a good offensive flow going as Hawley's defense was tough as usual."

The Nugget frontcourt of Allie and Drew Sannes was a match-up problem down low all game. The 5'11" senior Allie and 6'1" sophomore Drew were able to gain control in the paint, a space normally reserved for Perham star Katrina Moenkedick.

Allie Sannes led all scorers with 21 points, her 1,000th career point coming late in the game.

Guard Jessy Noreen had a huge game scoring at will at times. She had 16 points, including the game winner.

Moenkedick tied the game at 51 with 12 seconds remaining. Her layup lingered on the iron for more heartbeats than necessary, bouncing on the back of the iron before falling in.

After a timeout, Noreen took the ball the length of the floor scoring a uncontested layup for the lead leaving the Yellowjackets under five seconds to tie or go for the win.

The Nuggets had a foul to give and they used it leaving Perham stranded at half court trying to inbound the ball with less than two seconds on the clock.

Perham would not get a shot off.

"Noreen stepped up and made some big shots for them," Gullingsrud said.

The Yellowjackets suffered some unaccustomed lapses in scoring and sloppy ball handling in the second half.

"We really need to get our girls back to playing aggressive, intense, and confident basketball in our last four games if we intend to make a run come playoff time."

Moenkedick led the Jackets with 12 points. Her output was a deciding factor in the outcome as she picked up her third foul early in the second half and her fourth foul with eight minutes to play.

Her need to play more conservative than normal to stay in the game was evident.

Becky Stoll had nine points. Kelli Meehl scored eight.

The loss gives Perham its first two-game skid of the year after an overtime loss at Barnesville.

This time, it was the first half that caused problems.

"We really dug ourselves a hole in the first half and even though we got back into it in the second half, we were never able to grab control of the game."

Poor shooting and missed free throws contributed to the Jackets' struggle.

"We shot very poorly and missed some free throws in the closing seconds of regulation that could have been the difference in the game."

Once into overtime, the game was a repeat performance of the first half as Barnesville jumped ahead. Perham was forced to play catch up.

A riled up Barnesville crowd was on the Jackets from the start, moreso in the extra frame.

"It looked like their girls wanted to win more than ours. All of the credit goes to Barnesville as they really outworked and outhustled us and showed our girls what it is like to play aggressive and intense at this point in the season. Hopefully, we learn from this loss as we head into the final five games of our regular season."

The Yellowjackets are in the midst of a three-game homestand, their final three regular seasons in Perham. They will cap the week off with senior and autograph night Thursday, Feb. 10.
