The Cardinals closed to within 10 midway through the second half but could not make a run and Perham finished off the game easily outscoring Staples-Motley 36-23 in the second half. The score at halftime was 29-26.

"It was a back and forth game between two quick and aggressive teams," Head Coach John Gullingsrud said. "We were finally able to grab control early in the second half as we played some great half court defense that led to some Staples-Motley turnovers and easy baskets for our girls. We had too many turnovers and will need to rebound better as the season progresses, but our intensity was nice to see this early in the season."

Katrina Moenkedick led Perham with 23 points. Lauren Guck had 11 points and six rebounds, Kaylan Huber scored nine and Kelli Meehl had eight points.

"One major bright spot for us was the return of Lauren Guck from major knee surgery last March," Gullingsrud said. "She really gave us a lift offensively off the bench in the game tonight."

Three Cardinals fouled out of the game.
