Email

PERHAM — Both teams split the four rotations and Molly Lyngaas of Detroit Lakes was the all-around champion, but it was not enough for Detroit Lakes to upset the Perham gymnasts on Yellowjacket turf as the 11-time defending Section 8A champs defeated the Lakers 144.25 - 143.575 Friday evening.

Detroit Lakes got off to a hot start on their rotation on vault scoring 37.275 points to 36.15 from Perham.

Alexis Yliniemi won the event with a 9.575, followed by Ally Berg’s 9.45. Perham’s best vault came from Ashley Hokanson, who scored a 9.4.

Detroit Lakes held a slim lead 71.875-71.4 after vault and uneven bars. Perham outscored DL 35.25-34.6 on the bars to close the gap.

Lyngaas won the bars competition with a 9.45, followed by three Yellowjackets: Alexis Peichel (9.1), Carly Breitenfeldt (8.9) and Adrienne Meyer (8.8).

Perham took the lead in the meet on balance beam, led by Meyer and Jordan Martinson who finished first and third, respectively. Meyer won the beam with a score of 9.5. Lyngaas was runner-up with a 9.45 and Martinson scored 9.4.

The trio battled for the all-around title with Martinson (36.0) and Meyer (35.5) finishing second and third to Lyngaas’ winning score of 37.250. Emma Disse (35.25) and Ally Berg (33.8), both from DL, finished fourth and fifth overall.

Perham’s lead after beam was 108.150 to 107.275, with floor exercise to decide the meet.

The teams were at a near stalemate on floor with DL outscoring Perham by two-tenths of a point 36.3 to 36.1, not enough to catch the Yellowjackets.

Peichel won the floor exercise with a 9.4, followed by Lakers: Disse (9.35), Hokanson (9.05), Lyngaas (9.05) and Johanna Jernberg (9.0).

Meyer and Martinson competed on all four apparati and finished in the top five in each discipline for Perham.

The Yellowjackets got scoring contributions from seven gymnasts.

The two teams will face each other in Detroit Lakes Jan. 17. Perham will be in action next at Park Rapids Jan. 6 at 7:15 p.m.
