City and county offices are closed today in recognition of Veterans Day, which was yesterday, Nov. 11.

The communities of Perham and New York Mills joined others across the nation in holding special public programs last Friday in honor of Veterans Day.

These programs evoked emotion from audience members with patriotic readings by local students, music including TAPS and the National Anthem, guest speakers who relayed personal stories about their own experiences in the military, flag folding ceremonies, and more.

Veterans Day celebrates the service of U.S. military veterans. It was first set aside as a day of remembrance in 1919, by President Woodrow Wilson. The reflections of the day, Wilson proclaimed, should "be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."

The federal holiday was later expanded to include all veterans, not only those who died in service.
