The acting troupe took the top spot with their performance of "The Terezin Promise," the story of kids trying to preserve their poems and drawings while at a Nazi concentration camp.

Director Rachel Lorentz said she had a feeling the Players might go on to sections this year, "because they were doing a really excellent job of portraying their characters."

People in the Battle Lake audience had tears in their eyes, she said, and the auditorium was intensely silent throughout the whole show.

"It was really believable," Lorentz said.

In addition to bringing the play's difficult content to life, the kids faced another challenge on Saturday - working with a much smaller stage than they had rehearsed on. Lorentz said the props and lighting needed to be reworked to fit inside the smaller space, but the kids "adapted to what they had to do."

Sections will be held Saturday, Feb. 2 in Park Rapids, starting at 9 a.m. The Perham group is scheduled to perform sixth out of 8 total groups. Depending on their performance there, they could go on to the state contest.

"I hope we can go all the way!" said Lorentz.
