Perham school levy public meetings set

The Perham-Dent School District has gotten the official 'go-ahead' from the state to move forward with its Capital Projects Levy Referendum, and administrators are now planning public meetings to share information and gather feedback.

Superintendent Mitch Anderson said the school district received notice last Wednesday of the Minnesota Department of Education's positive review of Perham-Dent's levy plans.

In a statement to the district, Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius called the proposed levy "educationally and economically advisable."

The district is seeking a five-year levy beginning in 2013 that would provide up to $440,000 per year for technology upgrades and building and grounds improvements.

"The positive review from the Commissioner really solidifies what we're going after here and allows us to move forward," said Anderson. "We were happy to receive that."

The school board had submitted the proposal a few weeks ago, and was holding off on scheduling public meetings until receiving the state's support.

With that part of the process now behind them, district leaders are moving ahead with public informational meetings in Perham, Dent and Ottertail.

Anderson said the "old-school town hall-style" meetings will give the district a chance to be heard, as well as to hear the public's questions, concerns and comments.

"They will give everybody the chance to get some information about the capital projects referendum, which is much different than our operating levies of the past," he said. "Our goal is to be very transparent with this process."

Meetings will take place in Perham on Tuesday, March 20 and Thursday, March 29 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium; in Dent on Tuesday, March 27 at 7 p.m. at Dent School; and in Ottertail on Wednesday, March 28 at 7 p.m. at the Ottertail Community Center.

Those who are unable to attend the meetings may contact Anderson directly with any questions or concerns, at 218-346-1613.

Residents within the district will also be getting mailings regarding the levy.
