Perham swimmer a great role model
Congratulations to Kelsey Kratzke for being the first Perham girls swimmer at the State Class A swim meet.
She made history and is a great role model for young swimmers.
As a Fergus Falls swim parent, I was touched by Kelsey's comments on how the girls from Fergus Falls talked to her and helped calm her down before the section finals in Detroit Lakes. I was proud, but not surprised, that our girls reached out to a competitor. We all want our children to do well in sports, but the impetus to win is so strong that kids and parents often lose sight of what is really important - sportsmanship. The Fergus girls had a negative experience at an away meet this season in which the opposing team wanted to win so badly that it became a nasty, hostile environment.
My reaction was 'holy cow, lighten up, it's high school swimming, not the Olympics!'
Thanks again Kelsey for your nice comments. I know Perham is proud of your accomplishments. See you at the pool.
